Diego Silva comes to Stumptown Athletic with both left back and midfielder skills. Silva is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent two years at the Racing Club, winning championships both years. After coming to the U.S., he played for the Real Salt Lake Academy, winning a national championship. Silva received a full scholarship to the University of Maryland and was on the team that won two Big 10 championships. The U.S. National Team called him up four times - and he was a Generation Adidas cup finalist against England’s Stoke City.

When did you start playing soccer?

I began kicking a soccer ball at the age of two. My father took me to play with a local club, Defensores Del Dorado, in Argentina at a very young age where I really started to improve. Ever since I could remember, I wanted to be a pro soccer player. Now that I am living that dream, I can’t wait to see where the season goes with this team.

When did your soccer career take off?

I played for the Racing Club for two years in Argentina, which provided a lot of skills development and experience. We also won national championships both years I played. After that, Real Salt Lake Academy recruited me. I was there for three years and we won a national championship. That was really exciting and being with that team pushed me to be a better player.

I attended the University of Maryland on a full ride to play soccer and played for two years - both years, we won the Big 10 championship. I also graduated with a degree in criminology.

Who do you admire?

My parents have always been my inspiration. They have been behind me, always pushing, encouraging and supporting me throughout my soccer career. I wouldn’t be here without them.

When it comes to soccer players, I really admire Pity Martinez. He played with and became a champion with my favorite team, River Plate, which is in Argentina. He’s crafty on the field as well as quick and intelligent. The competitiveness he brings to the game is inspiring and he’s just overall a complete player.

What should fans know about you?

I am very excited to be playing for Stumptown Athletic. I love this game and am going to represent this team well and give it my all. I hope they see me as a crack (good fun) and I want to have a long, bright career with this sport.

Off the soccer field, I’m still all about soccer. I normally will be watching futbol, playing FIFA, or training. I also like going on hikes.
