Michael Binns brings his midfielder skills and pro experience to Stumptown Athletic’s inaugural season. Binns is from Jamaica, where he played for national youth teams and the Senior Team. Binns made his international debut for Jamaica at the 2016 Copa América against Venezuela and was part of the national team that played the U.S. in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Here in the U.S., he’s played with the Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads and Tulsa (Oklahoma) Roughnecks. Binns has a daughter, Michaela, who will be two in December.

When did you start playing soccer?

My dad was a pro player, and he says when I was less than a year old, he brought a soccer ball home and left it on my bed. He says from that day on, nobody could take the ball away from me.

I started playing on teams around age six, and was called up to our U-10 parish team, Clarendon Parish, at age seven. At age 10, I was called up to the U-12 team, where I was the youngest player; that was my first major title.

When did your soccer career take off?

I played on the U-15 team and was selected to attend and play soccer for one of the best high schools in Jamaica. I then played for the national youth 17 team, then youth 20, then youth 23, then the senior team.

When did you start playing professional soccer?

I signed my first pro contract at age 18, right after high school, with one of Jamaica’s top teams – Portmore United. I played for them a few years, then signed my first U.S. contract with the Wilmington Hammerheads.

What made you sign with Stumptown Athletic?

I was excited when I got the call from my agent, saying Coach Steffens was interested in bringing me here. I thought it was a great opportunity – a new team, a new environment – and I really liked living in North Carolina. I’m looking forward to a great relationship with the coaching staff and my teammates, and will see how I can best help the team and our younger players. I’ll bring my playing experience every day and hopefully, we can do great things together.

What should fans know about you?

I’m going to bring hard work and excitement to the team. I’m all in – 150 percent! My personality is pretty similar on and off the field. Off the field, I’m pretty laid back and quiet. Sometimes on the field I will be more vocal – that’s a different side of me.
